Incredible detail here! (How is this not anonymous?) I enjoy this style so much better than your softened, muted colors. Although that style can have it's place, this is far and above much more impactful - for me anyway.

Great capture of the intensity of his gaze.

Brautiful portrait, Rudi!
3 Peter Beddek   (5/6/2005 12:36:50 AM)
Fabulous portrait shot Rudi. Is this taken with a macro lens? Would love to know more technicals if OK with you.

17 Modest Blinker 1 (5/6/2005 6:53:38 AM)
In a detailed portrait like this, the eyes should be sharp. Now i know sharpnes is relative, but the nose and and mouth are sharper than the eyes, so the DOF is placed wrong. The difference between a nice portrait and a real winner i think
18 CherylB (I only lie when I do not like your pic)   (5/6/2005 7:07:35 AM)
maybe powder his nose next time..just kidding! I think this area should be sharper..otherwise nice portrait Mr. Anon :)

29 ChizhOFF (Alexander Chizhov)   (5/6/2005 11:09:00 AM)
Nice portrait! IMHO, I'd prefer the focus to be on his eyes.
30 joe bellantoni   (5/6/2005 11:16:36 AM)
Rudi: I must say this is probably IMO one of your best images...

The eyes really don't bother me and actually show a lot of emotion. the tone you have is crisp, the shadows are filled. It does not have the normal blur style you have used before and I like it much better. It almost reminds me of Yuri's images of the scenes from Istanbul series....well done, keep on this track it is far better than the blur effects. Not that you won't do them but I really think you have the start of something here. Bravo!
31 Martin1979   (5/6/2005 12:12:54 PM)
Rudi, this is marvellous. Okay, the focus on the eyes would have been better, but I don't bother here. Deep impact to me. Regards, Martin
32 Roger Ranney (Don't block the shot)   (5/6/2005 12:35:29 PM)

#17 Modest Blinker 1:

I think that when you are presented with working conditions that are arround you when you are about to take a picture, it's somewhat hard to be able to change certain things. Like light conditions. I agree with you that sharper eyes would have been beneficial for this portrait.

Still standing there with your camera, and choosing different apperture might have caused longer (too long) exposure and maybe caused blurr. So placing the focus on eyes instead would have taken away the detail from the forhead and nose. That would be worse result IMHO.

My opinion is that this is a GREAT portrait. I think I can only dream to compete with this.
40 MJFerron   (5/6/2005 8:37:29 PM)

47 LindaY (Linda Y)   (5/7/2005 9:56:10 AM)
Very intense and well done portrait, Rudi. I like your close crop on this one and the tones work well with the subject. I agree with Cheryl about the slight softness around the eyes, but this is a minor nit. Still very nicely done.
48 Jean-Philippe Poli   (5/7/2005 10:06:45 AM)
What a portrait ! So intensive. Wonderful shot.
49 Janet Jonas   (5/7/2005 10:19:18 AM)
aahhh... wonderful rudi. What you have done with the shallow dof is so nice. True if it had been perfect the sharpest detail would have been on the eyes, but you are so close on this one. I find myself spending much time exploring his face, almost like a landscape. Hills, valleys, textures... much to love on this. I wonder if placing it off center a bit would enhance this already magical image. If he is available you should do a series of images on him. His face deserves it. get at least one of his eyes tack sharp and keep the shallow dof, it creates much emotion in an image. Just some thoughts. I too think this is maybe your best image, as you let the shallow dof do the painting, rather than photoshop. congratulations, Janet
