Lovely feather detail Joe, the water drops on top ofthe head add alot. The staring eyes are hypnotic.

4 Rudi Van Gestel   (4/18/2006 12:58:56 PM)
Agree with Steve!
A bit oversharpened, imho, visible in the eyes (edge orange - black!!!)
5 Fred Vnoucek   (4/18/2006 12:59:43 PM)
well, I confess: envy! I need to downrate you otherwise I have no chance!!!
6 joe bellantoni   (4/18/2006 1:19:59 PM)
Just to let you all know this bird was sprayed with water and just wanted to explain that in the comments so if you see what appears as little white spots in the feathers around the face and eyes and top of the head...I don't want to debate any oversharpening as this is so sharp because of the water....Do what you must on the scoring but please send your own area Raptor centers some donations if you can....
7 DPS (David Stevenson)   (4/18/2006 1:24:33 PM)
#6 joe bellantoni: Have already donated.

Lovely fluffy and detailed owl and a great capture. :)
8 joe bellantoni   (4/18/2006 1:31:35 PM)
#4 Rudi Van Gestel: If you are talking about the eye iris and pupil it is just like our eye and moves up and down in size and should have a thin white line there....maybe this is not what you are talking about however thank you for bringing it up Rudi.
9 Rudi Van Gestel   (4/18/2006 1:32:14 PM)
#6 joe bellantoni: Too many people on this world... who really need it much more...!!!
10 OlgaSerg (Olga Sergyeyeva)   (4/18/2006 1:37:04 PM)

11 Joao Pedro Silva   (4/18/2006 1:56:52 PM)
#6 joe bellantoni: Thanks for the explanation on the water droplets. Needless to say this is an excellent shot. I'm most impressed with the exposure on the whites.

Regarding raptor centers in my area... if by "area" you mean the entire country, I think there are a couple of them in "my area".

18 PhotoWomyn (laughing @ the funny people)   (4/18/2006 3:13:21 PM)
I agree - excellent white feather detail...definitely shows you are a master....

Just a recommendation for others, too: In addition to monetary donations, we also donate framed bird photos for auction at fundraisers at raptor center and audubon facilities to aid in raising funds....every little bit helps.

#14 Jim Norton(James Norton): I will be in the Eugene, Salem, Portland area next week.....and am looking forward to seeing the local raptor center!! it will be added to the agenda :)
19 Kris Bass (peter pan is so real ))   (4/18/2006 3:21:48 PM)

We don't have a raptor center here. To cold for the birds heck to cold for us humans also. :0

Splendid as always Joe!
43 docmm   (4/19/2006 4:12:14 AM)
Wonderful clarity in the eyes, with preservation of the soft texture in the breast feathers.
Good detail in the feathers around the face and the top of the head, though I do wonder if a little over-sharpened here.
44 Kristian1   (4/19/2006 4:58:43 AM)
Great capture Joe

and his eyes...

all best
45 Reidar   (4/19/2006 5:51:56 AM)
Excellent shot with lovely detailes.
46 John More   (4/19/2006 6:08:07 AM)
Eyes do it for me every time Joe, it's a great image there is no doubts about that, feather detail is excellent, if you had not said there was water troplets on the bird I think my eyes would have been wandering around wondering what was different about the top of his head, the water does not spoil it for me, but then i don't think it adds anything either, but then I suppose thats personal choice... so next time take a hair dryer with ya LOL...I don't know if we have any raptor centres in the UK??
excellent image Joe.. very well done
47 cARTerART (Claire Carter)   (4/19/2006 6:55:17 AM)
My first impression was that he is sweating - then I realised that was a ridiculous thought, however a sweating owl fits in with your plea for help for them. Great image
48 KateWossner (keep on truckin')   (4/19/2006 7:14:47 AM)
Congrats Joe, a beautiful image for sure. I applaud your efforts. Most people don't help people or animals.

Hooz your daddy!
65 Greg (Greg Governale)   (5/3/2006 6:14:55 PM)
A very good exposure and wonderful details. The image does not seem oversharpened to me. The drops of water look great. The area around the beak seems slightly over saturated. It looks a little more yellow than what it needs to be, but not by much. It doesen`t hurt the image, it would just give a slightly different look. Greg Governale
66 khaled   (5/6/2006 6:22:18 AM)
