11 Daniel P. Creighton   (12/27/2001 11:29:17 AM)
Great B&W. A classic if ever there was one. Also an inspiration to others that there are great images in places, things, and times that are often overlooked.
12 jimstan   (12/27/2001 11:39:28 AM)
wow this image in my humble opinion is one of the best I have seen on or off the web this year and is without a doubt fine art, a black and white image that inspires me everytime I see it, thank you for sharing it

Composition is great, light is great, feel is great. I'm wondering... is it tilted just a bit to the right? Very nice job and I personally love those star lights. :-)

30 robinschooley (Robin Schooley)   (12/27/2001 9:49:49 PM)
A very fine cityscape, Dima. It captures a lot of energy. It seems apparent to me that some of the commentors above have never experienced shooting this sort of scene before. The "star" effects of the streetlights are not caused by a filter, but by the use of a small aperature. If they were not shot this way, they would appear in the scene as bright "blobs", and would porbably be far more "distracting" as one person referred to them. The bus is of course blurred from motion. That is what helps give this image its energy. A perfect combination of aperature han shutter speed had to be used here to capture the blur, render the human figures sharp, and capture great detail and DOF while maintaining excellent exposure. I am wondering if you hand printed this, Dima, or was this scanned from the negative? Truly excellent work.
31 mrgetz (Thinkyouneek )   (12/28/2001 12:25:10 AM)
Nobody has mentioned the guy on the right. I love that guy. Such a perfect silhouette. I don't comment much here anymore, so you know when I do it's an uncommon picture. Nice image.
32 Shirley D. Cross   (12/28/2001 12:49:16 AM)
Excellent, wonderful, and all the other adjectives already used! Like some famous old-time photographer's work.

34 Hazecity (Charles Leong)   (12/28/2001 1:50:12 AM)
I agree with Marty. The guy on the right helps anchor/stabilize the picture. Excellent shots, Dima! Thanks for sharing. (9.5)

It could be a perfect scene of the book "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold". Misterious and marvellous. Congrats!
40 Jeanne Miller   (12/28/2001 8:18:39 AM)
I thought the details under the photo meant that this was shot at 1/50th of a second with an aperture of f1.4, which doesn't seem like a very slow shutter speed nor a very small aperture, but rather a large aperture and a reasonably speedy shutter speed. Am I misreading the details?
41 robinschooley (Robin Schooley)   (12/28/2001 8:44:16 AM)
Pentax 50/1.4 is the lens used, Jeanne. It is a 50 mm lens with a maximum aperature of 1.4. It can, of course, be stopped down just like any other 35mm SLR lens. Dima has not given his exposure settings here, but in order to record certain optical effects, such as the motion of the bus or the "starring" of the streetlights, a certain range of settings must be used. I would also venture to guess that this was shot at an angle lower than eye level, looking slightly upwards. That is what would have caused the buildings on the left to "lean in".
42 alc   (12/28/2001 8:49:48 AM)
I read it as a 50mm with a max aperture of 1.4. No other details. It's quite apparent that it wasn't shot wide open.
43 VonBlashke   (12/28/2001 9:24:06 AM)
Excellent Dima!

My dear friends! I'm so happy you like this picture!!! I took it in a very small russian town Elets about three weeks ago. This town was very famous. In 14th century it stopped Mongol inroad into Russia. But now this town is very poor and long-forgotten. I'm going to put the gallery of about 60 pictures) of this place (I took in the course of last trip) into the Web........

Star lights really caused by aperture. But being well seen on the print they needed magnification on web-version. I think they express Christmas snowflakes. I don't remember exposure data correctly. The film was developed as 400ASA, I think shutter speed was about 1/8 sec. and aperture about 5,6.

Great, really great! You've capture life in a frozen frame. I guess that's one part of photography. Congratulations
56 Melony   (1/5/2002 11:22:37 AM)
I like this photo very much. I am a fan of night/lowlight shots. It was just my eyes but the bus was not apparent to me till my husband told me what it was. I think the "star effect" add to the scene.
57 Terry Forrest (Teresa Forrest)   (1/5/2002 8:56:28 PM)
Excellent black and white photo. Great details, nice effect with the "stars". I agree with Marty that the silhouette of the man up front on the right adds to it. Congratulations on POTD twice!! Not many of us have done it. The problem with that is then getting a POTD even for 1 day after getting it 2 days in a row! (9.25)
58 Berenice Kauffmann Abud (AFIAP /2004)   (1/6/2002 2:16:14 PM)

This is really wonderful.. I love the way the lights twinkle and sparkle. The movement of the bus just adds to the scene and tells a wonderful story here. It made a great b/w and your tones are just perfect. The silohette of the person the right looks like he is sad that he missed the bus by watching it drive way. Just Great!
67 Meinhardt, L.   (1/29/2002 8:19:24 PM)
Really beautiful composition and grays... Excellent exposure... Summary: Wonderful work!!!
68 Tim Askerov   (1/30/2002 10:14:26 AM)
Dime, you never stop to amaze me by your ability to make a piece of art out of a mundane scene like this one! As always, a great shot!
