details | Elvet bridge, Durham City, built by Bishop Pudsey (1153-95) is one of three bridges in England that has houses on them.
To the left of the image used to be prison cells beneath the arches where a gypsy piper, Jimmy Allen, was held until his demise in 1810. He held the title Piper to the Duchess of Northumbria and his passing was ill timed as three days after he was granted a reprieve! It is said that you can still hear the dulcet tones of Jimmy's pipes late at night under the arches.....visit if you dare!!!!
